A serious emergency occurred on the Rainbow Bridge at Niagara Falls on the US-Canada border.

A car exploded there. Two people were killed and one border guard was injured.

The investigation was carried out by the FBI, which initially did not rule out the possibility of a terrorist attack.

Details of the emergency

Like TASS, a car exploded on the American part of the bridge. According to an eyewitness, the car was speeding at more than 160 km/h.

When she got to the checkpoint, says an emergency witness, she crashed into “something” and then exploded.

It is known that two residents of New York state who were in the car were killed. The border guard was injured.

Later, information appeared that the car, which was reported stolen, contained explosives. A second vehicle was being sought that may have been connected to the explosion.

A suitcase was found at the scene of the incident, but during the initial inspection of the explosion site, FBI agents found no traces of explosive devices.

Some media outlets suggest that the car could have exploded due to careless driving.

Biden and Trudeau know

Later, reports appeared in the press that the version of the terrorist attack was not confirmed. At least, no evidence of this was found.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul also stated the same, and the FBI classified the incident as an accident and completed the investigation, transferring further investigation to the local police.

The White House said President Joe Biden has been briefed on the incident and is monitoring the situation.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is also aware of the explosion and has not ruled out the possibility of introducing additional measures to strengthen security in his country.

But immediately after the explosion, Canada closed the border with the States at the site of the emergency. The following checkpoints were also closed: Rainbow Bridge, Whirlpool Bridge, Queenston Bridge and Peace Bridge.

After some time, Canada opened three of the four bridges.

Security measures

Due to the incident, Buffalo Niagara Airport suspended all international flights.

However, according to media reports, domestic flights continued to operate.

The FBI took control of entry points into New York, and the mayor of the metropolis announced increased security measures in place in the city.

The American railway corporation Amtrak has suspended service between New York State and Canada.
