A powerful volcanic eruption occurred in Spain: general evacuation was announced

23views

On Sunday, September 19, in the Canary Islands, an autonomous community of Spain, the powerful Cumbre Vieja volcano awoke.

A natural disaster occurred on the island of Palma for the first time in recent decades, foreign media reported.

The total number of inhabitants of the island is approximately 80 thousand people.

Many of them will have to temporarily leave their homes. The fact is that the Spanish authorities announced a general evacuation.

This is due to the approaching danger: lava is approaching some populated areas. There are already problems with transport links.

It is expected that 10 thousand people will be evacuated. It is planned to transport all of them to a safe place.

In connection with what is happening, the head of the Spanish government, Pedro Sanchez, canceled his visit to New York: the politician wanted to visit this American city to participate in the UN General Assembly.

Spanish seismologists warned local residents in advance about the volcanic danger: just last week, experts recorded tremors.

The last time Cumbre Vieja erupted was exactly 50 years ago – in 1971.
