After the end of the siege, Brazil “buys time” for a mediated solution between Venezuela and Argentina

Brazilian diplomacy received confirmation, this Sunday afternoon (8), of the lifting of the siege on the Argentine embassy in Venezuela.

The representation has been held by Brazil since Argentine diplomats were expelled from the country, with the rupture of relations between Nicolás Maduro and the Javier Milei government, which did not recognize the result of the presidential elections on July 28 and declared the opponent Edmundo González as victorious.

The situation is still considered “tense” by diplomats, but Brazil now hopes that there will be a “calm” discussion to define what Argentina’s definitive representation in Caracas will look like.

For members of Itamaraty, the solution must be agreed upon between countries “without the embarrassment” faced this weekend.

On Friday night (6), Maduro’s government revoked Brazil’s right to represent Argentine interests in the country. The building’s electricity was cut off and hooded men laid siege to the embassy.

The Argentine Embassy houses six Venezuelan opponents wanted by Venezuelan justice.

Itamaraty released a note reporting the decision and highlighting the “inviolability” of embassies.

“In accordance with the provisions of the Vienna Conventions on Diplomatic Relations and Consular Relations, Brazil will remain in custody and defense of Argentine interests until the Argentine government indicates another State acceptable to the Venezuelan government to exercise the aforementioned functions” , informed the note from the Brazilian government.

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) called to discuss the situation in Venezuela, this Sunday (8), at Palácio da Alvorada, official residence of the Presidency of the Republic.

The meeting was attended by the secretary general of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, ambassador Maria Laura da Rocha, and Audo Faleiro, right-hand man of President Lula’s special advisor for international affairs, Celso Amorim.

Both Amorim and Chancellor Mauro Vieira are on international agendas this weekend.
