AGU goes to court to ask for R$89 million after fires in northern states

35views

The Attorney General’s Office (AGU) filed five lawsuits in Federal Court asking for R$89 million from companies and individuals who had destroyed native vegetation through fires.

The affected areas are in the cities of Rondônia, Amazonas and Pará. Around 5 thousand hectares of vegetation would have been destroyed, according to the AGU.

The processes were based on reports from the Brazilian Institute of the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (Ibama) during different periods, in addition to environmental infractions registered in:

  • Altamira (Pará)
  • Boca do Acre (Amazonas)
  • Buritis (Rondônia)
  • Lábrea (Amazonas)
  • São Felix do Xingú (Pará)

Questioned by CNNthe AGU did not inform who will be involved in the processes. According to the agency, the information could not be shared because this could interfere with the procedural strategy.

According to the AGU, the processes also ask that the accused have their assets blocked and that they are prohibited from exploring the deforested area in any way.

In addition, the suspension of incentives or tax benefits for those involved was also requested, in addition to the prohibition of access to credit lines from the Public Authorities.

There is no deadline for the Federal Court to rule on the AGU’s demand.
