An unknown infectious disease has been discovered in northwestern Tanzania.

The disease has already claimed the lives of five people.

This was reported on Twitter by the local publication The Citizen, citing the country’s Ministry of Health.

What is known about the new disease

The epicenter of the disease was the city of Bukoba, located on the shores of Lake Victoria.

At the moment, 7 cases of infection have been identified, five infected people have died. A rapid response team has been sent to the region.

Experts have not yet been able to identify the disease and its causative agent, although a thorough analysis of tissue samples taken from the deceased was carried out.

It is only known that the disease is infectious in nature and is accompanied by fever, vomiting, bleeding and liver failure.

The country’s Ministry of Health called on the population to exercise increased vigilance.

Anyone who sees anyone with similar symptoms should immediately alert the authorities by calling a special toll-free number – the department said in a statement.
