Anti-government rallies rocked the whole of Slovakia

51views

Anti-government rallies of thousands took place in many cities in Slovakia, including Bratislava.

Citizens thus expressed their indignation at the authorities’ plans to implement a global reform of criminal legislation.

And the initiator of such a legislative idea was the new government of Slovakia, headed by Robert Fico, MIA Rossiya Segodnya.

Protests began from the moment the plans were publicly announced at the end of last year.

The initiative involves mitigating penalties for some economic and property crimes, as well as eliminating the special prosecutor’s office.

The opposition believes that the intention to close the special prosecutor’s office is due to the desire of the new government to stop investigating politically sensitive cases.

On Thursday, January 25, about 27,000 people gathered for a protest in the capital alone (according to Slovak media).

People demanded that the government abandon the reform it was embarking on. The opposition stated that similar rallies were held in 14 other cities of the republic.

In Bratislava, some suggested stopping Robert Fico, chanting “We’ve had enough of Fico!”, “Let’s stop him!”

Citizens also demanded that the prime minister and his government resign.

And they said: if Fico does not stop the protests in dozens of cities in Slovakia, even more people will take to the streets.

Earlier, Slovakia supported the allocation of €50 billion to Ukraine from the EU.
