While participating in the procession this Sunday (13), President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) received an image of – patron saint of the Amazon – from the hands of a devotee who was in the middle of the crowd. First lady Janja da Silva and singer Fafá de Belém also participated in the celebration.
The video, published on the president’s Instagram, shows the man extending the image to Lula. After the representative accepts the gift, the devotee climbs a railing and hands over the replica of the saint. The day before, the president had also gained a third from the crowd.
The PT member watched the procession from the hot seat at Estação das Docas, in the center of Belém. The singer Fafá de Belém paid tribute this Sunday. The images were shared by the first lady on Instagram.
On Saturday (12), the president and Janja participated in the River Pilgrimage, when the faithful follow a procession with the image of Our Lady of Nazaré in Guajará Bay. The route went from the pier in the Icoaraci district to the Escadinha do Cais monument, in the capital’s port.
The religious festival, which has taken place annually for more than 200 years, is an act of devotion to Our Lady of Nazareth, one of the names of the mother of Jesus Christ in Catholicism.
Also known as the Patron Saint of the Amazon and fishermen, thousands of people go to Belém, capital of Pará, every year to give thanks for the miracles granted by the saint. The event is considered a Cultural Heritage Site by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco).
