The European Union does not have a contingency plan in case Hungary blocks the decision to provide Ukraine with 50 billion euros at the community summit on February 1.

This information was announced by the head of the Belgian Ministry of Finance, Vincent Van Peteghem.

The minister said in an interview that the European Union currently does not have a plan B.

According to Van Peteghem, the countries of the community need to work on ideas.

The head of the Belgian Ministry of Finance believes that the EU needs to negotiate with each of the 27 countries of the community, including Hungary.

He expressed confidence that at the upcoming summit the leaders of the EU countries will be able to make a decision on financing Ukraine.

At the December EU summit, the head of the Hungarian government, Viktor Orban, blocked amendments to the community budget for 2024-2027, aimed at providing Ukraine with 50 billion euros.

Budapest offered to provide assistance to Ukraine annually and from extrabudgetary sources.

The American publication Politico, citing European officials, reported that the EU is confident that assistance to Ukraine will be agreed upon in the next couple of weeks, despite Hungary’s objections.
