Monitoring of the betting market by the Federal Audit Court (TCU) will include topics such as, combating money laundering and the effects on the health of the population.

The need to monitor bets was approved in plenary last week – and members of the court’s planning team defined five axes of control.

The Court of Auditors will carry out a survey to map the level of income impairment of beneficiaries of social programs, especially Bolsa Família.

A study is also planned on the measures being taken by the Financial Activities Control Council (Coaf) to combat crimes related to betting, such as money laundering.

On a third front, the TCU will research the tax effects of betting. The idea is to analyze how this occurs in other countries and, in the specific case of Brazil, what the effects are on revenue.

The effects on public health are also on the court’s list of priorities. The plan includes a survey of prevention and treatment programs for ludomania, that is, addiction to gambling.

Finally, there is concern about the certification of algorithms used by betting companies and the regulation surrounding the security of registered users’ data.

This Friday, operators notified that they were not authorized by the Ministry of Finance were notified.

Currently, 96 companies – totaling 210 bets – have approval to operate in Brazil. They will need to pay a grant of R$30 million to be able to operate from January 1, 2025.
