Borrell: EU would not have committed to Ukraine’s membership if not for the conflict

The European Union would not have committed to Ukraine’s membership if not for the conflict.

This was stated by the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell.

What Borrell said about Ukraine’s membership in the EU

In an interview with a Spanish radio station, the head of the EU foreign policy service noted that granting Ukraine candidate status for membership in the community is a serious political commitment.

At the same time, Borrell said that the EU would not have taken on this obligation if not for the conflict.

We wouldn’t have made this commitment, but we did it, – said the head of European diplomacy.

Let us recall that on February 28 last year, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky submitted an application for the country to join the EU.

On June 23, 2022, at the EU summit, the granting of candidate status to Ukraine and Moldova was approved. To launch negotiations to join the community, countries must meet a number of conditions, including reforms.

According to the preliminary report of the European Commission on Ukraine’s readiness for negotiations on accession to the EU, presented on June 22, the country has fully fulfilled only two of the seven conditions – it has adopted legislation on media freedom and judicial reform.

The European Commission rated progress in the reform of the Constitutional Court as a four on a 5-point scale. In terms of the adoption of legislation to combat oligarchization, money laundering and corruption, and the status of minorities, Ukraine received a three.
