European Union High Representative Josep Borrell is concerned about Turkey’s refusal to lift anti-Russian sanctions.
The head of EU diplomacy is also concerned about the expansion of economic cooperation between Turkey and Russia.
This is stated in a document authored by Borrell, which was at the disposal of a German media group.
Why is Borrell worried?
The document says that Turkey’s continued non-compliance with anti-Russian sanctions is a cause for concern in the EU, and the expansion of Russian-Turkish economic cooperation is a cause for great concern.
Borrell noted that Turkey and the EU are forming a customs union, which allows for the free transport of dual-use goods that can be used for both civilian and military purposes.
According to the head of European diplomacy, in this context it is extremely important that Turkey does not offer Russia “workarounds.”
Earlier today, the Presidents of the Russian Federation and Turkey, Vladimir Putin and Recep Tayyip Erdogan, in a telephone conversation discussed the expansion of bilateral cooperation in various areas, including the creation of a gas hub in Turkey, as well as the Istanbul grain deal and the situation in Ukraine.
