What Borrell said about supporting Ukraine
The head of the EU foreign policy service devoted the bulk of his speech – 19 minutes – to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, while he spoke about Ukraine for less than 4 minutes.
Don’t forget about Ukraine, – Borrell said after a long speech on the Middle East conflict.
He stressed that the defeat of Ukraine would mean the defeat of the EU, and called on the community countries to remain united in supporting Ukraine.
The crisis in the Middle East is already having a long-term impact on our policy on Ukraine, – noted the head of EU diplomacy.
He said that during his last visit to the United States for the EU-US summit, together with the heads of the European Commission and the European Council, he expressed concern to US President Joseph Biden and Secretary of State Antony Blinken that support for Ukraine could begin to erode in light of the fact that is regarded as a policy of double standards.
The majority of countries in the Global South, the EU’s chief diplomat stated, consider the situation in Ukraine not a global problem, but a regional conflict affecting only the EU and the United States.
In this regard, Borrell called on EU ambassadors to increase efforts to counter-propaganda and persuade non-Western countries.
The head of European diplomacy noted that Brussels is not abandoning attempts to convince the Chinese authorities to support the United States and the EU on the issue of Ukraine.
We don’t expect them to accept our position, – he specified.
According to Borrell, Brussels expects China to interact more with Ukraine, in particular in matters of humanitarian aid.
And in convincing Russia to withdraw troops from Ukraine, – added the head of the EU foreign policy service.
