The EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, made an important statement.
He notified the general public of his desire to expand the association to include ten new countries.
Moreover, the diplomat insists that Brussels intensify preparatory work “for a new stage of expansion.”
In this regard, he wants a “time frame” to be agreed upon for the inclusion of ten more states in the European Union.
Mr. Borrell spoke about all this after an informal summit of the heads of the EU foreign ministries in Toledo, Spain.
The idea of expansion hovered over our discussion. Ukraine should become a new member of the EU, the Western Balkans too, – the main European diplomat TASS.
He noted that the process of EU expansion was accelerated by the war in Ukraine.
This is a merit-based process, but at the same time, I think it would be good to define political goals to give impetus to the process, Borrell said.
Then he called on Brussels to “be prepared to accept 10 new EU members.”
In these conditions, determining a certain horizon and time frame for admission will allow us to concentrate the efforts of the EU countries and candidate countries,” he shared his thoughts on the policy issue.
He also informed that the foreign ministers agreed to organize a meeting in September with colleagues from the Western Balkans for dialogue on the topic of enlargement.
