According to the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, the West’s refusal to provide military assistance to Ukraine will not lead to peace.
The head of the EU foreign policy service expressed this opinion in an interview with the Spanish publication Pais.
What Borrell said about peace in Ukraine
Borrell said that Europe is doing everything to achieve negotiations that recognize that there is an aggressor and a victim.
He noted that the West’s refusal to provide military assistance to Ukraine will not lead to peace.
I don’t believe that refusing military assistance to Ukraine will lead to peace, – said the head of European diplomacy in an interview.
Borrell also spoke about Ukraine’s accession to the EU. According to him, if not for the conflict in Ukraine, it would have taken years for Ukraine to join the EU.
The head of EU diplomacy noted that the conflict pushed Ukraine to the EU side, on which Moscow did not want to see it.
Earlier, Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine for European Integration Olga Stefanishyna said that Kyiv does not have time to implement all seven recommendations of the European Commission on the status of a candidate for EU membership by October, but is working on it.
Let us recall that on February 28 last year, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky submitted an application for the country to join the EU.
At the EU summit in June 2022, community leaders approved granting candidate status to Ukraine and Moldova.
In its recommendations on granting candidate status to Ukraine, the EC set seven conditions, the most comprehensive of which is the implementation of judicial reform.
It provides for reforming the Constitutional Court, completing changes to the High Qualifications Commission of Judges and the Supreme Council of Justice, and continuing the fight against corruption.
