Amid reports of Turkey applying to join BRICS, the European Union reminded Ankara of the need to respect EU values.

The corresponding statement was made at a press conference on September 3 by the representative of the European Union’s foreign policy service, Peter Stano.

Commenting on reports about Turkey’s application to join BRICS, Stano noted that Turkey, like any other country, has the right to decide what is best for it.

He recalled that Türkiye is a candidate for joining the EU.

And the candidate countries, the European official continued, must respect the values ​​of the community and comply with agreements.

According to Stano, the foreign policy of the candidate countries must be fully consistent with the foreign policy of the EU.

Including those carried out under trade agreements, – said a representative of the EU foreign policy service.

He emphasized that the EU and BRICS are completely different organizations.

In terms of purpose, structure, everything, Stano added.

Yesterday, Bloomberg reported that Turkey applied to join BRICS several months ago.

According to the agency, the issue of BRICS expansion may be considered at the association’s summit in October.
