Bulgaria expels 70 Russian diplomats

The Bulgarian authorities decided to carry out a large-scale expulsion of Russian diplomats.

It was decided to declare 70 diplomats and representatives of the technical staff of the Russian Embassy persona non grata.

Why Bulgaria expels Russian diplomats

As the acting head of the Bulgarian government, Kirill Petkov, said in his speech in parliament, representatives of the Russian Embassy were “identified as employees of the special services.”

Petkov noted that the expulsion of diplomats is not an act of aggression against the Russian people.

As Philip Voskresensky, minister-counselor of the Russian embassy in Sofia, told TASS, he and the consuls general in Ruse and Varna, Andrei Gromov and Vladimir Klimanov, are being expelled from Bulgaria.

Also among those expelled is the head of the Russian Cultural and Information Center, Yuri Makushin.

As a result, our Consulate General in Ruse is closed, from where all employees were expelled, – said the diplomat.

He also said that almost everyone from the Consulate General in Varna had been expelled and that, including family members, more than 200 people would leave Bulgaria.
