The president of , minister Cármen Lúcia, announced this Thursday (12) the creation of a working group to debate and combat gender-based political violence. The group will be called the Observatory of Women’s Fundamental Political Rights.

The creation of the working group was published in the Electronic Justice Gazette (DJE) this Thursday (12). In a plenary session, the president of the TSE mentioned the, which she classified as “diminished”.

TSE data show that women represent 52% of the electorate. Despite being a majority among the voting population, female candidacies represent only 34% of the 462 thousand total candidacies registered in 2024. In a universe of 5.5 thousand municipalities, there are 674 city halls led by women.

“This electoral process, as has happened in others, in which (female) electoral representation is so small, has suffered more political violence in an attempt to prevent women from being able, willing and able to participate in the political process of representation. This is unacceptable in every way”, said the minister during this Thursday’s plenary session.

According to the TSE, the Observatory on Women’s Fundamental Political Rights will be consultative in nature and must compile and disseminate procedural data on and the measures to be adopted so that the Electoral Judiciary Branch prioritizes the judgments of these cases.

“If violence is not allowed at home, it is not allowed in the domestic space, it is also a crime to reach the squares and in women’s participation (in politics). It is a crime and it is unacceptable. We will have more than half of the Brazilian population with low representation in spaces of power and, in this case, in municipal councils and city halls”, stated the judge.

The working group will also be responsible for proposing procedural alternatives, in terms of electoral law, to overcome electoral fraud, in addition to adopting campaigns to inform citizens about the duty to respect the right to equality in politics.

The observatory’s activities will be divided into three areas. Read:

  • Political and electoral rights;
  • Rights to privacy and equality against digital violence;
  • Fundamental political rights to equal opportunities for women to be socially and politically capable of exercising their prerogatives of nationality and full citizenship.

The observatory will be chaired by the president of the TSE, minister Cármen Lúcia, and will be composed of people occupying the General Secretariat of the Presidency of the TSE and the Court’s Ombudsman’s Office.
