Carriers of West Nile fever virus found in Finland

0views

A mosquito species new to Finland, Culex Modetus, which is known to spread the West Nile virus, has been found in the Pori area.

This message was conveyed by the University of Helsinki.

Scientists note that the occurrence of this disease is extremely unlikely in Finland.

Culex Modetus is the 44th mosquito species to be found in Finland.

This species of mosquito has also been found in the Leningrad region in Russia and in the Skåne region in Sweden.

The discovery was made by a researcher in the virology department of this university. Her name is Lorna Culverall.

She writes that only one representative of this species has been found so far, but Culvereull does not believe that there is only one such mosquito in Finland.

In southern Europe, the species Culex modetus can carry West Nile virus, which is a category of infection that causes quite unpleasant symptoms.
