Work has begun on the construction of Europe’s largest NATO base in Romania.

It is assumed that the facility can be fully operational from 2040. It will appear due to the expansion of the 57th air base of the Romanian Air Force “Mihail Kogalniceanu”.

TASS agency reported this with reference to Romanian television.

Construction began in the village of Mihail Kogalniceanu (Constanza County in the southeast of the country).

In particular, they are expanding the military complex that exists here. In a decade and a half, it will already occupy several thousand hectares.

According to the TV channel, thousands of American military personnel and their families will be present at the facility.

It is also reported that the Romanian authorities will invest about $2.5 billion in this project.

According to construction plans, the new facility will include additional runways, a new control tower, a beacon and radio navigation system, a flight simulator, and hangars.

In addition, administrative and social buildings, schools and kindergartens, shops, restaurants, a cinema and a hospital will be located here.

It is expected that the base will house approximately 10,000 NATO soldiers and their families, as well as base support personnel.

Let us add that elements of the US 101st Airborne Division, as well as allied fighters, are currently located at the Mihail Kogalniceanu base.

Previously, the European Parliament from Russia returned Romania to its gold reserves.
