The number of deaths during the Hajj to Mecca exceeded 1,000, and about 800 people are missing.

TASS reports this, citing sources in the diplomatic missions of several Arab states in Saudi Arabia.

What is known about the death of pilgrims during the Hajj

According to sources, most accidents during the Hajj were recorded among Egyptian pilgrims.

According to one of the agency’s interlocutors, Egyptian diplomats were notified of almost 1,400 Egyptians dead or missing.

According to the French news agency Agence France-Presse, at least 600 pilgrims from Egypt have died. A TASS source confirmed this assessment.

It is noted that many of the dead performed the Hajj illegally. Arriving in Mecca without the Hajj visa issued by Saudi Arabia to foreign pilgrims, they were unable to use special air-conditioned rest areas and made long treks in the open sun.

Against the backdrop of the extreme heat characteristic of the region in the summer, pilgrims died due to exacerbation of chronic diseases and exhaustion. Most of the dead are elderly.

The authorities of Tunisia, India, Pakistan, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, and Senegal also reported the death of their citizens during the Hajj.

Saudi Arabian officials did not comment on the death toll. The country’s Ministry of Health reported providing medical care to more than 2.7 thousand pilgrims who suffered from heatstroke.

As a representative of the Russian Consulate General in Jeddah told TASS, the number of Russians who died during the Hajj has increased to 5.

It was previously reported that NATO has the possibility of bringing its nuclear weapons to a state of combat readiness.
