Dmitry Muratov and Maria Ressa became Nobel Peace Prize laureates

Russian journalist Dmitry Muratov and his Filipino colleague won the Nobel Peace Prize.

On the occasion of the presentation of the high award, the press secretary of the Russian President Dmitry Peskov sent his congratulations to the editor-in-chief of Novaya Gazeta Dmitry Muratov.

The names of the 2021 Nobel Peace Prize laureates were announced by the Nobel Committee today.

Russian and Filipino journalists are recognized in this category for their “courageous struggle for freedom of speech in the Philippines and Russia.”

Representatives of the committee emphasized that Muratov defended the rights of journalists, and freedom of dissemination of information is the main tool “for democracy and for the prevention of wars and conflicts.”

Muratov is the third representative of Russia to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. Previously, the award was awarded to physicist and human rights activist Andrei Sakharov, as well as the first and last president of the USSR, Mikhail Gorbachev.

The Kremlin congratulates him on the award, TASS quotes the Russian President’s press secretary as saying.

Maria Ressa

The Filipino journalist was described by the Nobel Committee as a “fearless defender of freedom of speech.”

Ressa is one of the founders of Rappler, a portal that publishes independent investigative journalism.
