ELT: Watch the video of the largest telescope in the world

0views

A shot from the Atacama Desert of the ELT, the largest telescope in the world (under construction), exclusively for Passione Astronomia

Drone shot taken by Francesco Cuccio (Passione Astronomia) of the ELT, Extremely Large Telescope: the largest telescope in the world under construction. The film was shot during the trip created by Passione Astronomia in collaboration with San Donnino Viaggi, under the darkest sky in the world: . Guide in the desert, the astrophysicist Daniele Gasparri.

Details on the largest telescope in the world

The ELT’s giant dome will house the telescope and its internal structure, offering protection from the extreme environment of the Atacama Desert in Chile. The main structure of the telescope will contain its five mirrors and optics, including the enormous primary mirror from 39 meters. The ELT will have a pioneering five-mirror optical design that will enable it to unravel in unprecedented detail. The mirrors (M1, M2, M3, M4 and M5) all have different shapes, sizes and roles, but they will work together seamlessly to provide observations with never-before-seen clarity. The ELT will employ sophisticated “adaptive optics” technologies to compensate for the turbulence of the Earth’s atmosphere and to ensure that its images are sharper than those of any other telescope. It will also have other components such as a prefocal station that acts as a link between the telescope and its instruments. Finally, it will have a modern control system to allow the user to use the telescope for scientific observations and maintenance activities.
