Türkiye plans to become a full member of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization.

This statement was made by the country’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan following the SCO summit in Samarkand.

The agency reports this.

Erdogan’s statement

Journalists asked Erdogan whether Türkiye plans to become a full member of the SCO. The Turkish leader answered in the affirmative.

This is our goal, – said the head of the Turkish state, noting that this issue will be on the agenda at the negotiations in India.

According to Erdogan, Turkey’s accession to the SCO as a full member will take relations with the organization’s member countries to a completely different level.

Which countries are members of the SCO?

Currently, Türkiye has the status of a dialogue partner of the SCO. Armenia, Azerbaijan, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Cambodia have a similar status.

The declaration on the creation of the SCO was signed in 2001 in Shanghai by six countries – China, Kazakhstan, Russia, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan. Later, India and Pakistan became members of the SCO.

The observer countries of the SCO are Belarus, Mongolia, Afghanistan and Iran.

Last fall, at the summit in Dushanbe, the procedure for admitting Iran to the SCO was launched; this year, Belarus submitted an application to join the organization as a full member.
