Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan made a request to the United Nations.

He asked to change the name of the country in all official documents of the organization.

As far as we know, the UN met halfway and agreed to innovations. That is, now the name of the republic will sound slightly different.

MIA Rossiya Segodnya reported this with reference to the representative of the UN Secretary General Stephane Dujarric.

The Republic of Turkey has been renamed the Republic of Türkiye, – informed Mr. Dujarric.

And he added: the new name became valid immediately after the appeal from the Turkish authorities.

According to him, the short version of the name of Turkey will no longer be Turkey, but Türkiye.

At the same time, Turkey’s place in the alphabetical list remains the same,” the representative of the Secretary General clarified.

In turn, the head of the Turkish Foreign Ministry Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu explained the reasons for the desire to change the name.

According to his argumentation, Ankara thus wants to increase Turkey’s prestige in the international arena.
