EUobserver: some EU countries oppose Ukraine’s accession to the community

28views

Hungary, France and Austria do not want to see Ukraine in the European Union, and Germany does not believe in the possibility of Ukraine joining the community.

This was reported by EUobserver, citing a European diplomat.

Which EU countries are against the admission of Ukraine?

As a source told EUobserver, Austria will prevent Ukraine from joining the EU, hiding behind Hungary.

France, according to the publication’s interlocutor, also does not want to see Ukraine in the community.

And Germany is playing a cynical game, – added the diplomat.

According to him, the German authorities are in favor of amending the EU treaties, which will allow decisions to be made not unanimously, but by a qualified majority of votes.

As the diplomat explained, this will give Germany more power within the EU and will supposedly help speed up Ukraine’s entry into the community.

But in reality they do not believe that Ukraine will join the EU, – the interlocutor stated.

As reported, last week the European Commission recommended that the EU Council begin negotiations with Ukraine, Moldova and Bosnia and Herzegovina on accession to the community, as well as grant candidate status to Georgia.

A formal decision to start negotiations will be discussed at the EU summit in mid-December. The decision must be made unanimously.

Before a final decision is made, Ukraine, Moldova and Bosnia and Herzegovina will have to fulfill a number of conditions, the main one of which is strengthening anti-corruption measures.

As President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen said, in an ideal development of events, negotiations with Ukraine could start in March, but the timing of their completion is impossible to predict.
