Fighting international trafficking raises Brazil’s respect in Europe, says Gonet

The work carried out by Brazilian authorities against international drug trafficking has attracted the attention of European investigators, according to the assessment of the Attorney General of the Republic, Paulo Gonet.

“The fight against crime and international drug trafficking has raised the respect that Brazil has within Italy and within Europe, despite the major problem that is international trafficking, because they see that there is seriousness on our part in combating these crimes. Sometimes, a problem makes us come out bigger than we were when it was detected”, said Gonet when participating in the II International Sphere Forum in Rome, Italy, this Saturday (12).

The PGR took the opportunity to recall that Brazil has already been invited to join Eurojust, a body that brings together representatives of public ministries from European countries. In Gonet’s view, joining the group “will allow this permanent collaboration between European public ministries and Brazilian ones to be even more effective”.

During the event, the Attorney General of the Republic also highlighted the need for unity between the Powers to curb the growth of criminal factions in the country and highlighted that the time is opportune for this.

“We are at a moment of extreme institutional happiness in Brazil. We have a very good institutional relationship between the Powers, the institutions. We not only have a relationship of great respect, but of fraternity between the Federal Public Ministry and the Federal Police, between the MPF and the Judiciary and the Legislature”, he said.

Despite highlighting collective efforts, Paulo Gonet recalled that there is a point that can be improved in cooperation between institutions in Brazil to combat organized crime. “We need to move from the particularistic, case-by-case approach to a permanent approach” stated the PGR, suggesting a cooperation mechanism that is continuous.
