Chosen as one of Human Rights, she has a close relationship with the writer Conceição Evaristo. The two are cousins.
On social media, Macaé, who is 59 years old, and Conceição, 77 years old, have already joked about their relationship, because people think they are mother and daughter.
“I really saw Macaé born. I saw Macaé in the belly of her mother, Maria Antônia. But she is my cousin and not my daughter”, Conceição said on social media in December last year.
Macaé also said that fans have already confused the two and praise her for Conceição’s work.
According to the now minister, she responds in the following way when confusion occurs: “Ah, thank you, but I think what you love is my cousin”, she said.
Conceição Evaristo has a degree in Literature from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), a master’s degree in Brazilian Literature from the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (PUC-Rio) and a PhD in Comparative Literature from the Universidade Federal Fluminense (UFF).

In the previous election, in 2020, she won her first term as councilor of Belo Horizonte. The deputy was previously Secretary of Education in the capital of Minas Gerais (2005 to 2012) and in the state (2015 to 2018).
In 2013 and 2014, he was head of the Secretariat of Continuing Education, Literacy, Diversity and Inclusion of the Ministry of Education, in the government of Dilma Rousseff (PT).
The parliamentarian helped implement racial inclusion and full-time school policies at the Ministry of Education. She has a degree in Social Work, a master’s degree and a doctorate in education. She has worked as a teacher since she was 19 years old.
