First country in the world to report achieving herd immunity to COVID-19

7views

It became known that Israel became the first country in the world to officially report achieving herd immunity against the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus.

According to experts, vaccination protected not only the vaccinated population, but also those who, for various reasons, have not yet received the injection.

News agencies publish a message about this with reference to a publication in the journal Nature Medicine.

When did vaccination start?

Vaccination activities in Israel started on December 20 last year. Already on January 10, the second stage began, which included the introduction of the second component.

To date, almost 5.5 million people in the country have received the first dose of the drug. More than 5.1 million people have completed the full course, which is more than half the country’s population.

What has been achieved

Along with the increase in the pace of vaccination, the government systematically eased restrictive measures.

For example, catering and entertainment venues opened in March.

In April, the mask requirement on the streets was lifted, and today most of the restrictions have been lifted.

How does herd immunity work?

Israeli doctors have reported the emergence of herd immunity to COVID-19.

Initially, this mark did not exceed 10%. But thanks to mass vaccination in mid-February and early March, the number of vaccinated population reached 60-70%.

At the same time, the number of patients infected with coronavirus among the unvaccinated population has decreased by 10 times.

Scientists continue to monitor whether herd immunity will be able to contain the onset of infection once all restrictions are lifted.
