Forest fires: Lula schedules meeting with heads of Power this Tuesday (17)

9views

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) scheduled a meeting for this Tuesday (17) with the heads of Power to discuss the situation of forest fires in the country.

The presidents must participate in the meeting

  • of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), Luis Roberto Barroso,
  • of the Senate, Rodrigo Pacheco,
  • of the Chamber of Deputies, Arthur Lira,
  • of the Federal Court of Auditors (TCU), Bruno Dantas,

The Attorney General of the Republic, Paulo Gonet, is also expected to participate in the meeting.

The objective of the meeting, according to Planalto, is to think about actions to combat fires together with the other powers.

The Palácio do Planalto is still working on the possibility of receiving governors from states affected by the fires, but if this does not happen this Tuesday, a new meeting with only the state commanders should be held this week.

This Monday (16), Lula spent the whole day with the Minister of the Environment, Marina Silva, discussing priority actions to combat fires, especially in the Amazon and the Pantanal.

The government is also working on the possibility of announcing on Tuesday a (MP) that will be signed by Lula, including financial aid for rural producers who are suffering from the intensification of fires.

Orders

The Ministry of Justice sent requests to state governments for each federal entity to send ten firefighters to help fight the fires.

Goiás and São Paulo denied aid on the grounds that they also face intense fires in their territories.

A CNN had access to responses from 8 states to the ministry:

  • São Paulo and Goiás, which denied support,
  • Maranhão, Alagoas, Bahia, Paraíba, Piauí and Rio Grande de Sul, which confirmed the aid.

The letters were sent by the National Secretary of Public Security, Mario Sarrubbo. The documents stipulated the presentation of responses by this Sunday (15).

Maranhão responded that it has already sent 31 soldiers to fight the fire. The state reinforces that, at this moment, it is unfeasible to increase the number of firefighters assigned, as “it also faces a high number of fire outbreaks, especially in the southern region of the state, where teams from the capital and adjacent municipalities were also mobilized to reinforce the staff in these most affected regions”, as stated in the response sent to the ministry.

The other states responded that they will send support as follows:

  • Rio Grande do Sul: ten military personnel
  • Bahia: ten soldiers
  • Piauí: ten soldiers
  • Paraíba: eight soldiers
  • Alagoas: six soldiers

STF on fires

Dino determined, on September 10, the immediate call for more military firefighters to join the National Force and assist in fighting fires in the country.
According to the minister’s decision, the quantity would be fixed by the Ministry of Justice. Agents must come from states that are not directly affected by forest fires.

On Sunday (15), Dino also authorized the opening of extraordinary credits to combat fires and burning in the Amazon and Pantanal. In this modality, the release of resources is not limited by the fiscal framework and will not be computed for the purposes of calculating fiscal targets.

The federal government is expected to announce the extraordinary credit this Monday (16). Members of Palácio do Planalto met with the President of the Republic this morning to study emergency measures.
