Forest fires: Minister of Health denies guidance to close schools

The Minister of Health, Nísia Trindade, stated, this Tuesday (17), that there will be no general guidance for the closure of schools in Brazil that affect several areas of the country.

“We should not have a general guideline to close schools, because that would not be positive. Sometimes the school environment is even better than home. But this has to be monitored on a case-by-case basis,” said Nísia.

Last Monday (16), the University of Brasília (UnB) and two schools in the Federal District suspended classes because of the smoke caused by the fire that hit the Brasília National Park on Sunday (15).

The statements were made in a meeting with representatives of the three Powers. In addition to Executive ministers, the meeting was attended by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), the presidents of the Senate, Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG), the Chamber of Deputies, Arthur Lira (PP-AL), and the Supreme Court Federal (STF), Luís Roberto Barroso,

Nísia also emphasized that the precautions adopted during the pandemic should not be repeated.

“The important thing is that, in the environments we are in, there is care. We are not replicating the pandemic precautions. Sometimes there is confusion about this. The situation is serious, but requires different care”, concluded the minister.
