The former head of government of the unrecognized Nagorno-Karabakh Republic Ruben Vardanyan was detained by Azerbaijani border guards while trying to enter Armenia.

The press service of the State Border Service of Azerbaijan informed about this on September 27.

How Vardanyan was detained

According to the Azerbaijani State Border Service, Vardanyan was detained today at the Lachin checkpoint.

The State Border Service of Azerbaijan also reported that Vardanyan, accompanied by RRF officers, was taken to Baku and handed over to government authorities in relation to making a decision regarding him.

Vardanyan’s wife Veronica Zonabend confirmed the information about her husband’s detention.

This morning my husband was arrested and captured by the Azerbaijani authorities at the border while trying to leave Artsakh, – she reported on Vardanyan’s telegram channel.

Vardanyan is known as the founder of the investment company Troika Dialogue and the Skolkovo school of management.

Last September, he announced his renunciation of Russian citizenship and his move to Nagorno-Karabakh. In November he was appointed head of government – NKR State Minister.

In December, Vardanyan’s application to renounce Russian citizenship was granted. In February he was removed from the post of head of the NKR.
