German Foreign Minister: Germany will not supply cluster munitions to Ukraine

0views

Germany remains committed to the Convention on Cluster Munitions and will refrain from transferring them to Ukraine.

This was stated by German Foreign Minister Annalena Bärbock on July 7 at a conference on climate change organized in Vienna by the Secretary General of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe.

The minister’s statement is quoted by the agency.

What Burbock said

Journalists asked the head of German diplomacy to comment on US plans to transfer cluster munitions to Ukraine.

I followed media reports. For us, as a participating state, the Oslo agreement is valid and applies – Burbock answered.

The head of the German Ministry of Defense, Boris Pistorius, also spoke out against participation in the supply of cluster munitions to Ukraine.

Germany signed the convention, so this is not an option for us, – said the head of the German defense department at a press conference in Bern.

Let us recall that the day before the media reported that the United States had decided to transfer cluster munitions to Ukraine.

Later, the US Department of Defense announced that it would select cluster munitions for Ukraine that pose a minimal threat to civilians.

Cluster munitions are charges with a large number of explosive submunitions for various purposes (incendiary, anti-personnel, anti-tank, etc.).

Cluster munitions are in service with the armies of many countries in the form of artillery shells, missile warheads and bombs.

In 2010, the Convention on Cluster Munitions, signed in 2008 in Oslo by 123 countries, came into force. The document was ratified by 110 countries. They pledged not to produce, use or transfer cluster munitions to anyone.

Of the European countries, the convention has not been signed by Ukraine, Russia, Belarus, Armenia, Greece, Azerbaijan, Poland, Georgia, Romania, Latvia, Turkey, Serbia, Estonia and Finland.
