The head of the German Ministry of Justice, Marco Buschmann, said that German legislation does not allow Ukrainians liable for military service to be extradited to Kyiv.

The minister made this statement in an interview with the German publication Welt am Sonntag.

What Bushman said about the extradition of Ukrainians

In the interview, the minister noted that he understands the desire of the Ukrainian authorities to return citizens liable for military service from abroad to serve in the Armed Forces.

However, according to the head of the German Ministry of Justice, German legislation does not allow the extradition of these people.

As the head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine Igor Klimenko stated in October, Kyiv is looking for legal mechanisms to return and punish those liable for military service who illegally traveled abroad.

The head of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, Rustem Umerov, said in an interview with the German publication Bild in December that in 2024 it is planned to mobilize Ukrainians who have gone abroad.

According to Bild, since February 2022, more than 220 thousand Ukrainian men of military age have arrived in Germany.

Roderich Kiesewetter, member of the Bundestag from the CDU, spoke in support of Umerov’s idea.

He called on the German authorities to assist this initiative, and also proposed to suspend the payment of benefits to Ukrainians liable for military service.

The deputy noted that 10 divisions could be formed from Ukrainian draft dodgers located in Germany.

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky said in December that the General Staff of the Armed Forces had asked to mobilize another 450-500 thousand people. According to Zelensky, such mobilization will cost the country $13.4 billion.

Earlier, the new law on mobilization will affect Ukrainians who have gone abroad.
