An Italian mafioso ended up in the hands of Spanish police after his location was “surrendered” to law enforcement by the Google Maps service.

A 60-year-old man successfully hid from justice for two decades in Spain under an assumed name, but accidentally ended up on camera.

Italian mafioso Gioachino Gammino was arrested thanks to the development of Google Maps, reports.

The detainee is suspected of involvement in murders committed in Italy.

In his homeland, he managed to avoid retribution and hid in Spain for 20 years under an assumed name, selling fruits and vegetables in his own store.

The gangster was accidentally photographed by a Google Maps camera.

Also, by chance, law enforcement officers noticed the photo and came to the conclusion that the subject was very similar to the wanted Gioacchino Gammino.

When the information was confirmed, they came for the man and arrested him right in his own store.

The mafioso was extremely surprised by what happened and told the officers who came after him that he was so deeply undercover that he had not even called his family members for 10 years.

Until recently, Gioachino Gammino was on the list of the most wanted Italian criminals.

In 1998, he was taken into custody, but soon escaped from prison.
