The government wants to conclude studies on . Discussions on the matter are still ongoing and are led by the Ministry of Mines and Energy, the National Electric System Operator and the Energy Research Company (EPE).

A meeting of the National Energy Policy Council, this Tuesday (17), is expected to discuss the matter. The committee also includes representatives from the National Electric Energy Agency (ANEEL), the Electric Energy Trading Chamber (CCEE) and the National Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels Agency (ANP). Sources heard by CNN point out that the tendency should be to recommend the return of summer time, but that the final decision should be made by Palácio do Planalto.

The Minister of Mines and Energy himself, Alexandre Silveira, stated – in an interview with Rádio Itatiaia – that summer time is now a very pressing reality from an energy point of view, even for. According to him, it is not possible to say that Brazil is experiencing a moment of energy insecurity.

“With this water scarcity at peak times between 6pm and 8pm, when we lose solar energy and wind energy decreases, we need to dispatch thermal plants. The effect of daylight saving time is not just an energy security effect,” he said.

Silveira recalled that the current situation is different from years ago, because there is R$9 billion in cash to invest in distributors, but that it is necessary to increase the security and resilience of the system, in addition to planning for 2026.

The end of the one-hour postponement of the clock was made official during the government of former president Jair Bolsonaro, in April 2019. The justification was the economic analysis of energy during the period and how the population’s biological clock is affected.
