IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi assessed the situation at the Zaporozhye NPP and called it unstable.

According to him, we are talking about a complete or partial violation of all the pillars of the Agency’s nuclear protection.

Grossi’s statement

The situation at the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant remains unstable. All seven pillars of nuclear safety have been completely or partially undermined, MIA quotes Rafael Grossi as saying with reference to the Agency’s official portal.

The statement itself was made at the IAEA Board of Governors, which began today in Vienna.

Safety of Zaporizhia NPP

In 2023, the head of the IAEA announced at the UN Security Council five principles for ensuring the safety of the Zaporozhye NPP with an appeal to support his proposal.

The following points were discussed:

  • do not attack the station;
  • do not deploy heavy weapons and military personnel to attract attacks;
  • do not endanger the power supply of the station;
  • protect the structure and safe operation systems of nuclear power plants;
  • do not take actions that undermine these principles.

Let us recall that the Zaporizhia NPP, located on the left bank of the Dnieper, became the property of the Russian Federation in October 2022.

Zaporozhye NPP is recognized as the largest powerful station in Europe.

Earlier it became known that a bill was signed in Georgia.
