Harvard University professor Stephen Walt saddened the Ukrainian authorities.

In an article for Foreign Policy, he notified Kyiv that NATO would not protect it even if Ukraine became a member of the Alliance.

Article V of the North Atlantic Treaty is not a trigger that would oblige members of the bloc to fight if another member was attacked, – expert of MIA “Russia Today”.

He added: the States are now actively insisting on a broader interpretation of the mentioned article.

In particular, Washington wants it to include the concept of how NATO members can act “as they see fit.”

In this light, the professor gives his own interpretation: in this context, the countries of the Alliance do not have to use their troops to protect another state.

Walt says that the current position of NATO countries on refusing direct participation in the conflict with Russia may not change even if Kyiv joins them.

NATO is not a magic shield at all, the Harvard scientist once again disappointed the Ukrainians.

Previously, Ukraine was a “tank graveyard” in the United States.
