In a video released by NASA, eight stars stretch and deform before being swallowed up by a black hole 1 million times the size of the Sun!
NASA has released a video showing a large black hole 1 million times our Sun which swallows 8 stars. A simulation in which we can observe them approaching the event horizon, to then be deformed and stretched by the great gravity of the black hole. Some completely fall apart in a huge flow of gas: this phenomenon is called tidal disruption. Others, however, are only partially destroyed, retaining their mass and returning to their original shape after approaching the black hole.
Black holes: the survival of a star depends on its density
This division between stars that disintegrate completely and others that manage to survive would not be related to their mass, but rather to density. Scientists are using these computer simulations to understand how the mass of black holes and the density of stars influence tidal disruption events. The results will help them estimate how often these phenomena occur in the universe, helping them process images even more accurate of these close encounters.
The simulations, carried out by a member of the Max Planck Institute for Astrophysics di Garchingin Germany, are the first to combine Einstein’s physical effects with astronomical models regarding stellar density. The stars examined in the video are about one-tenth to 10 times the mass of the Sun.
