At the height of the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, scientists and representatives of the World Health Organization warned of a number of consequences that such a situation could provoke.

Against the general background, the risk of the spread of dangerous diseases has increased. Among them was bird flu.

The results of the biologists’ study were published by Science.

Researchers warn of an outbreak of H5N8 influenza. We are talking about a subtype of highly pathogenic avian influenza.

They first started talking about it several decades ago. In 2020, a series of ongoing outbreaks of H5N8 influenza in birds were identified in dozens of countries.

The risk group includes not only migratory birds, but also farmed chickens and ducks.

Human cases of infection are currently being reported.

WHO officials report 862 cases of human infection with avian influenza. All of them are laboratory confirmed.

Of these, 455 were fatal.

Almost 76% of all cases were detected in Egypt and Indonesia.
