How does fire work in space?

7views

Here’s how NASA designs standards and materials to keep astronauts safe in space.

Compared to a few decades ago, people may feel safer in their homesthanks to regulations that have removed highly flammable materials from clothing and homes. NASA relies on studies like this to protect astronauts when selecting materials and suits for spacecraft. Fire in space, however, is really another matter. Changes in gravity and airflow can dramatically alter how flames spread. This is how firefighting buildings will be designed for missions.

The SoFIE project

The SoFIE project consists of a series of experiments developed internally to better understand how fire behaves in space. SoFIE will work in the Combustion Integrated Rack (photo) of the ISS, which has a chamber where you can experiment with fire in complete safety.

The experiment

These types of experiments will help NASA identify the best ways to put out fires in space, especially in preparation for a human landing on Mars. On Earth, gravity has a profound influence on flames, but in space, fire may behave unexpectedly and be .

On the International Space Station

The microgravity environment of the International Space Station offers scientists the opportunity to study the nature of fire in space. The data collected will then be applied which will tell us how to behave in a dangerous situation in the future. The research will focus on how things ignite, burn and can go out in space. An important basis from which to improve our knowledge of the elements in the cosmos.
