The Hungarian government has declared an energy emergency in the country.

The corresponding decision was made following a meeting with Prime Minister Viktor Orban.

This was announced by the head of his office, Gergely Guyash, noting that energy prices have risen sharply in Europe due to the war in Ukraine and anti-Russian sanctions.

He also informed that “an energy crisis has broken out across large parts of the continent.”

Budapest believes that Europe will likely not have enough gas for the upcoming autumn-winter heating season.

To ensure energy supplies for Hungarian families and the country’s economy, the Hungarian government, like many other countries, is declaring a state of emergency in the field of energy, Guillas TASS agency.

He added that local authorities have approved a seven-point action plan. The document should come into force in August.

The head of the office explained: the plan involves increasing gas production within the country and increasing the volume of purchases of blue fuel abroad.

Restrictions and prohibitions are introduced. In particular, the use of gas at preferential prices and the export of certain energy resources.

In addition, coal production is expanding, the capacity of the Matra power plant is being restarted at an accelerated pace, and the life of the Paks nuclear power plant with Russian nuclear fuel is being extended.

With these measures, the authorities intend to ensure “normal energy supply at reasonable prices.”

We want to guarantee Hungary’s energy security and reduce utility bills for the population,” concluded Gergely Gulyas.
