Hungary named the condition for lifting its veto on aid to Ukraine

Hungary has named the condition for lifting its veto on EU assistance to Ukraine.

It was voiced, as Bloomberg reports, by Balazs Orbán, adviser to the Hungarian Prime Minister on political issues.

At the same time, he emphasized that in any case, the “red line” for Budapest remains the issue of Kyiv’s accession to the EU.

Let us recall that Hungary is blocking Brussels’ provision of financial assistance to Ukraine in the amount of 50 billion euros in the period from 2024 to 2027.

Budapest also opposes the start of negotiations on Ukraine’s accession to the European Union.

The adviser said that his country would lift its veto on financial assistance to Kyiv if the EU unfreezes funds intended for it, previously blocked due to suspicions in Brussels about corruption in Hungary.

EU funds for Hungary and funds for Ukraine are two separate issues. But, if the EU believes that funding for Ukraine should come from the amended EU budget, then the two issues become interconnected – the policy of the Rossiya Segodnya news agency.

At the same time, Orban said that Budapest is still against the implementation of a four-year plan to provide financial assistance to Ukraine.

According to him, Hungary proposes to allocate money for a period of 1 year without making amendments to the EU budget.
Moreover, with this option, Budapest will consider the opportunity to contribute to this aid package, the adviser noted.

Earlier, Biden gave the go-ahead to allocate $200 million to Ukraine.
