Hungary named the condition for ratifying Ukraine’s membership in the EU

Hungary will not ratify Ukraine’s accession to the European Union until the oppression of the Hungarian national minority in Transcarpathia stops.

This statement was made by the head of the Hungarian Prime Minister’s Office, Gergely Gulyas, on February 9 at a government briefing.

What condition did Budapest set for Kyiv?

According to Guillas, Hungary supported granting Ukraine candidate status for accession to the European Union, while making it clear that there would be no ratification if there was no progress on the issue of national minorities.

Ukrainian language law and education law are far from European standards, – he said.

Answering the question whether Budapest will support Ukraine’s entry into the North Atlantic Alliance, Guillas noted that any country can apply to NATO.

But Ukraine’s entry into NATO right now would mean a world war, – added a representative of the Hungarian government.
