IAEA experts discovered mines near the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant

0views

Anti-personnel mines of directed action were discovered by experts of the International Atomic Energy Agency on the periphery of the territory of the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant.

According to IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi, they do not pose a danger to the nuclear power plant.

And they were found during an inspection carried out by agency employees on July 23 – they noticed mines in the buffer zone.

We are talking about the territory between the internal and external fences along the perimeter of the object.

Restricted area

According to experts, the mines were located in an area to which the nuclear power plant personnel do not have access – MIA Rossiya Segodnya.

But during the inspection of the internal perimeter, IAEA experts did not identify any such dangerous objects.

Grossi recalled that his organization was aware of the previous installation of mines outside the perimeter of the nuclear power plant and some locations inside it.

Our team discussed this particular detection with the station and they were told that this was a military decision, in an area controlled by the military,” the CEO said.

Nuclear safety

He emphasized that the presence of such items does not comply with IAEA safety standards and nuclear safety regulations.

In addition, it “creates additional psychological pressure on plant personnel” even though, according to the agency’s initial assessments, mine explosions cannot affect the nuclear safety and security system of the nuclear power plant.

Grossi assured that IAEA specialists will continue to interact “with the station.”

Previously, he said that the organization’s experts carried out additional checks at the site, which did not reveal heavy military equipment, explosives or mines there.
