In the Canadian city of Oakville, a monument to the Ukrainian SS division “Galicia” was dismantled.

The Ukrainian publication “Strana” reported this on March 8 on Telegram.

According to the publication, the monument to “Galicia” was erected at the Ukrainian cemetery in Oakville in 1988.

It is noted that the memorial was repeatedly vandalized, and local activists and journalists demanded that it be removed.

Oakville Mayor Rob Burton said he was disgusted to realize that such a monument stood in his city.

The issue of demolition became relevant after the scandal with the honoring of “Galicia” veteran Yaroslav Gunko in the Canadian Parliament, – writes “Country”.

Scandal with honoring Gunko in the Canadian Parliament

Last September, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky visited the local parliament as part of his visit to Canada.

Among others, 98-year-old Galicia veteran Yaroslav Gunko was invited to the event.

He was introduced to the applauding audience as a veteran of the fight against the Russians during World War II.

When it turned out that Gunko served in “Galicia”, a scandal erupted. Canadian Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly called the incident a disgrace and called for the resignation of the speaker of the lower house of parliament, Anthony Rota, who took the blame for inviting Gunko.

Rota subsequently resigned. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called the Gunko incident a terrible mistake and apologized.

In February, Canada rejected Russia’s request to extradite Gunko.

Earlier, French President Emmanuel Macron wants to send troops into Ukraine during the Russian offensive on Kyiv.
