Iran became a full member of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization.

The corresponding decision was made at the SCO online summit in New Delhi.

The virtual meeting was broadcast by the SCO Secretariat.

The declaration adopted at the end of the summit emphasizes the historical significance of Iran’s admission to the organization.

Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, in his speech at the summit, emphasized that this decision will provide the country with conditions for strengthening sovereignty, security and sustainable economic development.

Raisi also called on the SCO countries to switch to payments in national currencies.

Iran became the ninth member of the organization. Initially, it included six states – Russia, China, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan. In 2017, Pakistan and India joined them.
