Iraq reacts to missile attack on Erbil

35views

Last night, March 13, the Iraqi province of Erbil was hit by rocket attacks.

A total of 12 missiles were fired (as it turned out later, by Iran) and they exploded near the US Consulate General.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (elite units of the Iranian Armed Forces – IRGC) took responsibility for the attack.

Tehran cited the reason for the missile strike as a response to “Israel’s recent crimes.”

The fact is that on March 8, the IRIB broadcasting corporation reported that two IRGC officers were killed during an attack by the Israeli army in the Damascus area.

The Iraqi Foreign Ministry called the missile attack on its territory “a blatant violation of the country’s sovereignty and an encroachment on its security.”

This was reported by TASS agency with reference to the publication Shafaq News.

Baghdad condemned the rocket attack, which, according to the country’s Foreign Ministry, affected the houses of residents of Erbil province in Iraqi Kurdistan.

The department also interprets what happened as an attempt to intimidate the civilian population, as well as an intention to destabilize the situation in the region.

The Foreign Ministry called for “a united position to resolutely oppose any actions aimed at spreading chaos.”

As already noted, 12 rockets exploded near the US diplomatic mission building under construction.

One local resident was injured, but fortunately there were no casualties. The building in which the office of the Kurdistan 24 TV channel is located was damaged.

Some media reported that the missiles could also hit Israeli Mossad intelligence facilities, but the authorities of Iraqi Kurdistan denied this data, noting that there are no such facilities in Erbil.
