What is the NATO accession ceremony like?

The ceremony for admitting a new ally to NATO usually takes place at the organization’s headquarters in Brussels.

The act of accession is signed, then the flag of the new member of the alliance is raised.

The completion of the procedure is considered to be the transfer of the document of entry into the custody of the United States.

According to information, the ceremony will be attended by the head of the Swedish government, Ulf Kristersson, and the commander-in-chief of the Swedish Armed Forces, Mikael Büden. Ambassadors of NATO countries have been invited.

The day before, the new President of Hungary, Tamas Szuyok, signed the ratification of the agreement on Sweden’s accession to NATO.

Hungary became the last country to approve Sweden’s application. As a result, the kingdom entered the alliance almost a year after Finland, although the countries submitted their applications simultaneously, in May 2022.

Press Secretary of the Russian President Dmitry Peskov noted that Sweden’s accession to NATO would have negative consequences.

According to the Kremlin representative, Moscow will take measures similar to those being developed in the context of admitting Finland to the alliance.
