What the King of Jordan said about Gaza refugees

Answering questions from the press about a possible influx of Palestinian refugees to Jordan, Abdullah II said that the country would not accept them.

This is the red line. No more Palestinian refugees, neither in Jordan nor in Egypt, – said the monarch.

According to him, this problem must be resolved within Gaza and the Palestinian territories in the West Bank.

There is no need to shift it onto the shoulders of other states, – added the King of Jordan.

Jordan has hosted an estimated 2.4 million Palestinian refugees, most of whom arrived in the country in 1948 after the Arab-Israeli War. Palestinians make up at least 35% of the kingdom’s population, and the first wave of refugees received Jordanian citizenship.

However, at least 300,000 Palestinians still live in refugee camps without the right to citizenship.

Another wave of refugees swept into Jordan after the Iraq War. Then at least a million Iraqis arrived in the kingdom.

After the military wing of the Palestinian movement Hamas launched an operation against Israel, the IDF began massive bombing of Gaza, forcing residents of the strip to move south.

With the forced exodus of more than a million Palestinian refugees, the West has begun to put pressure on Jordan and Egypt to accommodate the refugees, according to Arab media.
