Latvia adopted a law on deprivation of citizenship for supporting a Russian special operation in Ukraine

37views

On April 21, the Seimas of Latvia, in the second and final reading, approved amendments to the law “On Citizenship”, providing for the deprivation of citizenship for supporting military actions, including the Russian special operation in Ukraine.

62 deputies voted for the amendments, 14 abstained, and one voted against.

Delfi reports this.

As the publication clarifies, the introduction of amendments is justified by the beginning of a Russian special operation in Ukraine.

According to the bill, Latvian citizenship can be deprived of a person who took part in hostilities regarded as a crime against peace.

Deprivation of citizenship is also provided for providing significant material, financial, technological, propaganda and other support to individuals, states, and other entities that have committed actions that threaten the territorial integrity, independence and sovereignty of democracies or the constitutional order.

It is noted that MP from the Latvia First party Yulia Stepanenko voted against the amendments, and all 14 parliamentarians who abstained are members of the Harmony party.
